Tweed Ride
Sweet Cycle- photo by Cameron Clarke
Rutherglen is known world wine for vintage wine, though for at least one weekend wine has had to share equal billing with vintage fashion and bicycles. The inaugural running of ‘The Sweet Cycle’ on May 19 attracted more than 60 cyclists to the region for what was billed as a day of cycling revelry in the glorious north –east. The event is staged over a leisurely 25 kilometres with attendees enjoying regular stops to indulge in some of the regions finest food and wine. Tweed was the attire of choice for the majority of participants, with many completing the look with a vintage bicycle. The Sweet Cycle formed part of the inaugural High Country Harvest – a collective of more than forty events spread across ten days in North East Victoria. Rutherglen plays host to a number of other great events which can be viewed at www.highcountryharvest.com.au
June Long Weekend-Winery Walkabout
Victoria's original wine festival...
Rutherglen will once again be the place to be on the June long weekend for the annual Rutherglen Winery Walkabout. From the beginnings in 1974 when the Winemakers' of North East Victoria joined forces to promote their quality wines, the festival has grown in size and stature. Rutherglen Winery Walkabout now attracts over 20,000 visitors and boasts three Tourism Awards including "Best Festival in Victoria" and was also named "Best Festival in Australia". Armed with Walkabout glasses & wrist band, the young, old and in between descend on the wineries for a spectacle not to be missed. An array of entertainment and activities are happening throughout the weekend. You'll find each of the wineries is offering something different from reserve tastings of rare vintages, to live bands, produce markets, unique breakfasts or special dinners.
